Marine diesel engines, particularly in commercial shipping, may operate on fuel with sulfur content that varies by route and regulatory zone, which affects the acid-neutralizing demand placed on the lubricant.

A marine oil's base number — its capacity to neutralize acidic combustion byproducts — needs to be matched to the fuel quality and sulfur content an engine actually runs on, since an underspecified base number allows acidic buildup that accelerates corrosion and component wear over time.
