The Wet Clutch Challenge

Most motorcycles use a wet clutch — meaning the clutch plates run in the same oil as the engine and gearbox, rather than being sealed off in their own dry housing like most car clutches.

That design is compact and effective, but it means the engine oil also has to manage clutch friction characteristics. Too much friction modifier, and the engine may see reduced protection; too little, and the clutch can slip under load or engage harshly.

Our motorcycle oils are formulated to strike this friction balance specifically for wet-clutch systems, unlike car engine oils formulated without that constraint in mind.

Gearbox Protection Within a Shared System

A motorcycle gearbox experiences shock loading and shear stress during gear changes that a car's separately-lubricated transmission doesn't put on the same fluid as its engine oil.

Extreme-pressure and anti-wear additives in our motorcycle oils are formulated to protect gearbox components under these conditions without compromising the friction characteristics the wet clutch depends on — a balancing act that's specific to motorcycle applications and doesn't translate directly from automotive oil formulation.
